What Record Gold Prices Actually Mean for Your Engagement Ring

What Record Gold Prices Actually Mean for Your Engagement Ring

Every week someone sits at our counter and asks a version of the same question: why does this ring cost what it costs? Gold prices are the honest answer. The metal has moved more in the last two years than in the two decades before it, and if you are shopping for an engagement ring right now, that matters  not because you should panic, but because three decisions that used to be cosmetic are now financial. Karat. Setting weight. Whether you use metal you already own.

Our family has been setting stones since the 1960s in Carlentini, Sicily, and working at our own bench ever since. Across three generations we have watched gold run before. Here is what we tell clients this year.

What the Metal Market Is Actually Doing

Metals Focus expects global gold jewellery consumption in 2026 to land more than a third below its 2023 level, with bar and coin investment overtaking jewellery as gold's largest demand category. The World Gold Council has recorded steep declines in jewellery demand across the major markets over the same stretch.

Buyers are moving away from heavy traditional pieces toward lighter designs and more planned, value-conscious purchases. That is a rational response, not a downgrade.

None of this changes what makes a good ring. It changes what you should ask about before you approve one.

14k or 18k Is Now a Real Decision

18k gold is 75% pure. 14k is 58.3%  more alloy, which means lower cost and better durability for daily wear.

That difference used to be a conversation about colour and feel. At today's metal cost it is also a visible line on the invoice.

    • 18k: richer, warmer colour. Softer. Traditional for fine settings and for anyone who wants that specific yellow.

    • 14k: harder wearing, better under knocks, materially less metal cost.

Our view: for a ring worn every day, particularly on an active hand, 14k is not a compromise. It is frequently the better engineering choice. Choose 18k because you want the colour  not because you assume it is the proper answer.

    Weight Hides in the Setting

Most buyers concentrate on the stone and accept the setting as given. This year that is backwards. The setting is where grams accumulate quietly.

    • Cathedral shoulders and heavy shanks carry far more metal than they appear to.

    • A hidden halo or a thick under-gallery adds weight you will never see once it is on the hand.

    • Tapered or hollowed shanks reduce grams without reducing strength.

    • Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical design prices differently.

Ask for the finished gram weight before you sign off on a design. Any jeweller who cannot tell you that number is not measuring it.

    The Gold You Already Own

This is the part most people miss, and it is the one that changes budgets most.

High metal prices cut both ways. An inherited chain, a ring nobody wears, one earring from a lost pair that is not sentiment sitting in a drawer. It is material, and it is worth considerably more than it was three years ago.

We remount family stones and melt family gold into new settings regularly, and we handle estate jewellery every week. It is among the oldest things a jeweller does, and it has rarely made more sense than it does now. You reduce the metal cost of the new piece, and you keep something of the previous generation inside it. In our experience, the ring means more afterward, not less.

Bring it in. We will weigh it in front of you and tell you plainly what it is worth toward something new.

    One Note on Timing

Proposal season runs from late November through February, and benches fill in October. Custom work moves through design, approval, casting and setting  that takes weeks, not days.

If you want a ring made rather than selected, start the conversation now. Waiting until December narrows you to what already exists in the case.

Our bridal collection is online, and we are here in Woodbridge and in Yorkville when you want to see pieces in person. Bring the old gold with you. Three generations of us have been having this conversation across a counter, and it is still the part we like most.
