The Story of Wellendorff - Part 1

In 1893, Ernst Alexander Wellendorff made a pivotal decision that would echo through generations. He founded his own jewellery manufactory in Pforzheim, the golden city renowned for its mastery of fine craftsmanship. This single act of vision became the cornerstone of a legacy built on precision, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

The Wellendorff Manufactory stands as the beating heart of the brand—a place where every piece of jewellery is meticulously created. What distinguishes this manufactory is not merely its location or reputation, but the philosophy embedded in every detail: complete control over the entire creative process. From the closely guarded family formula for the alloy to the skilled hands of master goldsmiths, everything unfolds under one roof.

The Foundation of Excellence: The Alloy

At the core of Wellendorff's identity lies a proprietary alloy, smelted from fine gold, silver, and copper according to a family formula protected for generations. While tradition dictates that 18-karat gold contain 750 parts pure gold per 1000 parts, Wellendorff's master goldsmiths take a deliberate step beyond convention. They add two additional parts of pure gold—a subtle yet profound refinement that elevates the metal itself. This "over-alloying" transforms the gold into something more exclusive, more durable, and distinctly Wellendorff.

    Mastery in Every Setting

The two-prong setting exemplifies the artistry that defines Wellendorff. Here, hand-selected diamonds are carefully positioned and secured with merely two delicate prongs of gold. This technique demands extraordinary skill—only the world's most experienced jewel setters have mastered this art. Each stone is allowed to catch and reflect light with uncompromising brilliance, a testament to the jewel setter's understanding of how light dances through precious gems.

The Brilliance of the Sun setting pushes this artistry further. Rather than traditional placement of one or two diamonds, ten different sizes are set by hand to create a mesmerizing effect—each rotation of the ring revealing a thousand rays of sunshine. Achieving this requires approximately 40 specialized tools, including different drill bits, milling cutters, engravers, and beading tools. The precision and experience demanded of even the most seasoned jewel setters is extraordinary.
